Your toddler is getting more curious, more mobile, more verbal - everything is exciting! As a mum, finding the right toy  means more than just fun: it’s about supporting development, encouraging exploration, and ensuring safety. In this guide, you'll find: Top toy picks  for two-year-olds in the UK — our curated “Top 5”, based on Amazon UK bestsellers + expert recommendations. A Buying Guide  — what to look for (safety, durability, learning value). Tips to help your child grow — skills you can support through play. Call-to-action ideas so you can get connected with our Carol App community for more personalized suggestions. What Makes a Great Toy for a Two-Year-Old? Before we dive into specific products, let’s cover what to look for. Feature Why It Matters at Age 2 Safety  (no small parts, BPA-free, CE/UKCA marked, EN71 compliance) Toddlers still explore with mouth & hands; choking risk is real. Durability  (solid, washable, able to take drops) Because the toy is going to be thrown, chewed, dragged & loved. Developmental value  (motor skills, language, problem solving, role play) These are the years when foundations are laid. Simplicity & open-endedness Toys that allow variety in how they’re used often give more mileage. Age-appropriate challenge If it’s too easy, they lose interest; too hard and it frustrates. At two, skills like stacking, sorting, basic pretend play are emerging. Top 10 Toys for Two-Year-Olds (UK Picks) Here are ten toys currently popular / well recommended for two-year-olds in the UK, with what makes them special, plus tips to choose. Note: Prices, availability & colours may vary. Always check current stock & delivery in your postcode. Pretend Play Sets   (e.g. Mini Kitchen Sets, Tool Benches, Doll - Accessories)These sets encourage copying adult behaviour, imagination, social / emotional play. Can promote sharing, language (e.g. “cook”, “build”, “feed”), pretend-scenarios. How These Picks Compare: What & When to Use Indoor vs Outdoor : Ride-ons and push walkers are great outdoors (or in halls), whereas books, blocks, pretend-play work well indoors. Quiet time vs Active time : Musical toys, pretend play or reading are perfect for wind-down. Building, walking, pushing are better for bursts of energy. Solo play vs Parent / Sibling participation : Some toys are designed for independent exploration (shape sorters), others offer brilliant times to bond (reading books, pretend play). Safety & Regulations: What Mums Should Know in the UK Under the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 , all toys sold in the UK must meet essential safety requirements. Look for the UKCA  (Great Britain) or CE  (still relevant in many toys) mark. EN71 is the standard test for safety (mechanical, flammability etc.). Avoid parts that are too small: anything that could be a choking hazard for under-3’s. Washable / easy-clean surfaces are a huge plus (hygiene, longevity). Making Good Toy Choices on a Budget You don’t need to spend much to get brilliant. Some tips: Check Amazon Warehouse , operator promotions , or local toy shops for sales. Consider multi-use toys  (e.g., building sets that grow with the child or pretend play sets with many pieces). Second-hand is okay if the toy is in excellent condition, clean, intact, with safety standards still clearly visible — avoid used toys with missing parts or broken bits. How Play Builds Skills at Two Here’s what your toddler is developing and how the toys above can help: Skill Area What To Expect at ~2 Years Toys That Support It Gross Motor  (running, climbing, pushing) More stable walking, squatting to pick up, climbing stairs with help Ride-ons, push walkers, simple outdoor toys Fine Motor & Hand-Eye Co-ordination Building towers, turning book pages, placing shapes Blocks, puzzles, shape sorters Language / Communication Vocabulary expanding fast; combining words; naming things around them Interactive books, pretend play, singing/musical toys Social / Emotional Interested in parallel play; may imitate adults or peers; beginning of turn taking Pretend play; games; role play sets Cognitive (Problem Solving / Cause & Effect) Figuring out how things fit; what happens if you push or pull; memory tasks Matching games, building, interactive books, cause-and-effect toys Where to Buy in the UK & Delivery Tips Amazon UK  tends to have wide stock, reliable delivery, Prime options. Always check if it’s fulfilled by Amazon or a third party. High Street toy shops  (The Entertainer, Smyths Toys, Hamleys) often let you see / test before buying. This supplement aims to change the conversation around weight management for women: moving away from depletion and towards nourishment, energy, and sustainable wellbeing. Weight management is one of the most common health concerns among women, whether during postnatal recovery, perimenopause, or later life. Wild Nutrition’s nutritional therapy team, who speak to more than 1,000 women every month, report that the challenges of weight are rarely just physical. They often involve: fluctuating energy changes in hormone balance confidence and self-esteem shifts Current statistics highlight the growing demand: 50% of women are actively trying to lose weight While such medications may offer short-term results, they can also disrupt gut health, reduce skin elasticity, and deplete key nutrients such as Vitamin D, Magnesium and B12. For many women, this can result in fatigue and additional health concerns that require nutritional restoration. Wild Nutrition’s Weight Management Support offers a nourishing alternative; supporting metabolism, energy, and long-term wellbeing without asking the body to go against its natural rhythm. Inside the formula: Metabolaid® and Food-Grown® nutrients “Weight management doesn’t have to mean depletion,” says Isabelle Nunn, Head of Nutrition at Wild Nutrition .“This supplement changes the conversation around weight management. It's not about eating less, it's about nourishing more." The formula contains: Metabolaid® (UK-first) - A botanical complex of Lemon Verbena and Hibiscus, supported by two decades of scientific research. Nutrient-dense support - Zinc, Chromium, Magnesium, Vitamins B6, B12, C and D — replenishing nutrients that are often lost during dieting Science-backed benefits (based on ingredient research) Supports metabolic function and fatty acid metabolism Helps maintain healthy blood glucose levels Contributes to energy release, hormonal balance, bone and muscle health Wild Nutrition also provides complimentary nutritional consultations, helping women learn more about their health and how supplements may support their goals. • Matrescence: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How to Navigate It

Pregnancy changes your body, yes — but what about your mind, identity, and relationships? For generations, we’ve spoken openly about the physical changes of motherhood, yet the emotional and psychological shifts remain largely unspoken. That’s where the term matrescence  comes in — a word that captures the often messy, beautiful, and disorienting process of becoming a mother. If you’ve ever thought, “Why do I feel like I’ve lost myself?” , or “I’m not who I used to be, and I’m not sure who I am now,”  — you’re not alone. What you’re experiencing isn’t failure, weakness, or something to ‘get over’. It’s matrescence . And understanding it can change everything. What Is Matrescence? Matrescence is the physical, emotional, hormonal, and psychological transition a woman undergoes when she becomes a mother  — whether it’s through pregnancy, birth, adoption, or another route. Coined by anthropologist Dana Raphael  in the 1970s (the same woman who popularised the term "doula"), matrescence is to motherhood what adolescence is to adulthood — a fundamental transformation of self. It’s not just the arrival of a baby — it’s the birth of a mother . And yet, while adolescence is widely acknowledged as a turbulent but expected phase of life, matrescence remains largely absent from mainstream conversation, medical models, and even postnatal care. This absence can leave mothers feeling unseen, misunderstood, and isolated during one of the most significant identity shifts they will ever face. How Matrescence Affects the Mind, Body and Identity Matrescence is multi-layered and affects women across every domain of life. It is not a brief moment. It is a process — often extending from pregnancy and early postpartum through the first few years of motherhood and beyond. Emotional & Psychological During matrescence, it’s common to experience: Grief for your former life, identity, and freedom Joy and love alongside rage, confusion or numbness Changes in friendships, romantic relationships, and social needs A sense of disconnection from your pre-motherhood self Heightened anxiety or overthinking, even in moments of happiness Many mothers describe it as a constant push-pull between wanting to be the mother they imagined and the person they used to be. This inner conflict is not a sign something is wrong. It is a natural by-product of transformation. Hormonal & Biological Just like adolescence, matrescence is driven by massive hormonal shifts , which can affect mood, memory, libido, energy levels, and even brain structure. Recent neuroscience has shown that the maternal brain physically changes  — new connections are formed in areas related to empathy, vigilance, and emotional regulation. These changes help a mother bond with her baby, but they can also contribute to overstimulation, sensory overload, and burnout when unsupported. Social & Cultural Modern motherhood often expects women to "bounce back" physically, emotionally, and professionally , without recognising the full depth of their transition. Many mothers feel pressure to: Maintain their pre-baby lifestyle and body Be endlessly grateful, even when struggling Navigate parenting without complaint or community Prioritise everyone else’s needs before their own This disconnect between societal expectations  and matrescent reality  can deepen feelings of shame and inadequacy. Matrescence vs Postnatal Depression: What’s the Difference? One of the reasons matrescence is so important to understand is that it helps distinguish normal psychological adjustment  from clinical conditions like postnatal depression (PND) or anxiety. Matrescence is not a diagnosis . It is a developmental phase , not a mental illness. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, unsettled, or even regretful at times during matrescence — particularly when navigating big emotional shifts. But if you are experiencing: Persistent low mood or numbness Difficulty bonding with your baby Intrusive or distressing thoughts Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy Feelings of hopelessness or panic …then you may be experiencing PND or postpartum anxiety. Both are common and treatable. Reach out to your GP, midwife, or health visitor for support. Understanding matrescence can reduce unnecessary pathologising of this phase — but it also helps highlight when extra support is needed . Why Every Mother Deserves to Know About Matrescence When mothers understand that matrescence is real, valid, and natural, the entire narrative around early motherhood changes. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” , mothers begin to ask: “How can I support myself through this?” “What do I need in this phase of my life?” “Who can I connect with that truly gets this?” This shift empowers mothers to seek self-compassion , community, and support — rather than self-blame or silence. At Carol App, we believe that naming this experience is the first step to healing . How to Support Yourself Through Matrescence Matrescence is not something to “fix” — but it can be supported . Here’s how: 1. Name the experience Just knowing the word matrescence  can be transformative. It gives language to what feels otherwise intangible and validates your internal shifts. 2. Slow down where you can This is not a time to rush. If possible, simplify your to-do list, say no more often, and create space to be with your emotions. 3. Find spaces where you can be honest Motherhood isn’t always joyful. Find people or communities where you can be real, vulnerable, and messy  without judgment. 4. Honour the loss and the becoming You are not who you were — and that’s okay. Honour both the grief and the growth. Write about it. Speak about it. Acknowledge it. 5. Seek professional support when needed You don’t have to figure it all out alone. Whether it’s a therapist, perinatal coach, or support group, professional guidance can provide enormous relief and clarity. Matrescence is a powerful, ongoing evolution. Like any transformation, it is full of contradictions — joy and grief, love and loss, strength and surrender. It’s not linear, and there’s no clear finish line. But here’s what’s true: you are not broken. You are becoming. At Carol App, we’re here to walk beside you through the complex, beautiful mess of motherhood  — with expert guidance, honest community, and tools that help you reconnect with yourself. Download Carol App today  for FREE on IOS and Android to access articles, classes, and conversations that honour the full spectrum of matrescence. References Raphael, D. (1973). • Toddler Weaning Recipes Easy & Quick Nourishing Meal Ideas

Weaning doesn’t end at the first spoonful of purée. For toddlers aged 12 months and beyond, weaning evolves into helping your child explore textures, flavours, and balanced meals. At this stage, toddlers are learning to self-feed, join family mealtimes, and develop a positive relationship with food. This guide shares practical, easy-to-follow weaning recipes that support toddlers in their transition from baby food to family meals - all while keeping prep time minimal and nutrition front and centre. Why Toddler Weaning Matters Between 12 and 24 months, your toddler’s nutritional needs change. Their energy increases, iron and protein requirements rise, and their eating habits start to form more clearly. This is the perfect time to encourage variety, embrace mess, and set the tone for healthy eating long-term. Key weaning tips for toddlers: Offer soft, bite-sized finger foods to support self-feeding Include a source of iron (like beans, egg, meat or fortified cereal) at least once a day Aim for balance: include carbs, protein, fat and fibre across the day Keep mealtimes pressure-free – appetite can vary daily Read More - How to start weaning 7 Easy Toddler Weaning Recipes 1. Trust their appetite, stay consistent with variety, and remember: your job is to offer the food; theirs is to decide how much. • Helping Your Toddler Adjust to a New Baby

Welcoming a second baby? This guide will help you prepare your toddler emotionally for the arrival of a new sibling with practical tips, honest advice, and gentle strategies that work. Bringing a new baby into the family is a joyful time but for toddlers, it can also be confusing, emotional, and even scary. Helping them feel secure and included is one of the most powerful gifts you can offer during this transition. Start Before the Baby Arrives: Talk about the baby in age-appropriate ways Read picture books about siblings Let them feel the baby kick or help pack the hospital bag Reassure them of your love with words and rituals The Early Weeks – What Helps: Keep routines as consistent as possible Have one-on-one time daily (even 10 minutes matters) Ask for their help — bringing wipes, holding the nappy bin lid, or singing to the baby Acknowledge their feelings: “It’s hard to share mummy sometimes, isn’t it?” Common Reactions and How to Support: Regression:  Potty training setbacks, clinginess or night waking are normal. Meet them with calm. Jealousy or anger:  Avoid shaming. Say: “You’re allowed to feel that way. Mummy still loves you just the same.” Acting out:  Offer positive outlets for big feelings (art, movement, books) Fostering Sibling Connection: Let your toddler “introduce” the baby to visitors Encourage soft touch and supervised cuddles Talk about “our family”, keep the language inclusive Transitions are hard for little ones, but love, attention and patience go a long way. This season is tender, but it's also the beginning of a beautiful bond. • Weaning Your Baby : A Gentle, Step-by-Step Guide

Wondering when and how to start weaning your baby? This step-by-step guide covers signs of readiness, first foods, feeding tips and common questions. Weaning is one of the biggest changes in your baby’s first year. From first tastes to full meals, it’s a chance to nourish not just your baby’s body, but their confidence and curiosity too. When to Start Weaning: According to the NHS, most babies are ready around 6 months. Signs of readiness include: Sitting upright with good neck control Bringing food to their mouth Showing interest when others are eating Losing the tongue-thrust reflex What First Foods Should I Try? Vegetables:  steamed carrot sticks, mashed sweet potato, courgette Fruits:  pear, banana, soft-cooked apple Iron-rich foods:  lentils, puréed chicken, beans Start with single ingredients before combining flavours. Traditional Weaning vs Baby-Led Weaning: Both are valid and can even be blended. Traditional weaning  starts with spoon-fed purées and gradually adds textures. Baby-led weaning (BLW)  lets babies self-feed soft, safe finger foods. There’s no perfect way to wean, only what works best for you and your baby. Tips for a Smooth Start: Keep it calm and unhurried Expect mess (it's part of learning) Let your baby explore with their senses Never pressure them to eat, this builds trust Common Questions: What about allergies?  Introduce common allergens (peanut, egg, dairy) one at a time, and during the day. What if my baby doesn’t like something?  Keep offering — it can take up to 10 tries for a baby to accept a new taste. Follow your baby’s lead, make it joyful, and know that however you choose to wean, you’re doing it with love. References: NHS UK.
