Creating a Bedtime Routine That Actually Works - Baby Sleep Routine

We know just how exhausting those sleepless nights can be when you have a little one in tow. But we're here to help you craft a bedtime routine that actually works, giving you and your bundle of joy some much-needed rest. So, let's explore the world of soothing sleep routines.

1. Stick to a Schedule – Consistency is key when it comes to bedtime. Establishing a regular sleep schedule for your little one can work wonders. Aim for a consistent bedtime and try to wake up around the same time each day. It may take some time for your baby to adjust, but soon enough, you'll find a rhythm that works for both of you.

2. Dim the Lights – Creating a calming atmosphere is essential for signalling to your baby that it's time to wind down. Dim the lights/turn on lamps instead of ceiling lights in your home about an hour before bedtime to help set the sleepy mood. This will encourage your little one's natural sleep hormones to kick in.

3. Digital Detox – While it's tempting to catch up on social media or binge-watch your favourite shows during those late-night feedings, it's best to establish a "digital detox" for yourself. Avoid exposing yourself to screens at least an hour before bedtime. This will help your brain unwind and prepare for a peaceful rest.

4. Relaxation Rituals – Incorporate relaxation techniques into your baby's bedtime routine. A gentle massage, lullabies, or reading a bedtime story can work wonders in creating a soothing environment. Remember, your calm and comforting presence will help your baby feel safe and secure.

5. Set the Stage – Creating a sleep-friendly environment is essential for both you and your baby. Ensure the room temperature is comfortable, and consider using blackout curtains to keep the room dark and peaceful. This will help create a sleep sanctuary for your little one.

6. Mindful Moments – Encourage mindfulness before sleep. Take a few deep breaths together, sing a calming song, or share a special moment of bonding with your baby. These gentle moments of connection can help your baby relax and settle down for sleep.

7. Bedtime Boundaries – Establishing clear boundaries around bedtime is important. Let your baby know that it's time for sleep and there won't be any more playtime or snacks. Consistency is key here, so stick to the routine you've set to avoid confusion and extended awake time.

8. Sleep-Friendly Snacks – If hunger strikes before bedtime, offer your baby sleep-friendly snacks. Opt for light and soothing options like a small bottle of warm milk or a comforting breastfeed. Avoid heavy meals or sugary treats that can disrupt your baby's sleep.

9. White Noise Wonder – White noise can work wonders in creating a calm and peaceful sleep environment for your baby. Invest in a sound machine or use a fan to provide a gentle and consistent background noise that can help drown out any disruptive sounds and lull your baby into a deep slumber.

10. Once the routine is complete and it's time to sleep, make sure you prioritise your own rest as well. We know it's tempting to tackle all those tasks on your to-do list, but remember that your sleep is important for your well-being too. Give yourself permission to let go and allow your body and mind to recharge alongside your baby.

With a well-crafted bedtime routine, you'll may find night times become easier and your little one goes to sleep faster. Remember, consistency, relaxation, and a sleep-friendly environment are the key ingredients to success here but we know that every day can differ and every baby is different but after using these principles they really helped our little ones fall asleep sooner and made evenings more relaxing for us!
