"What was the best advice you received as a first time mum?" When you become a mum, suddenly everyone wants to give you their advice and 'how to' do things. It's important to remember that you know your baby best, so even with all the best intentions in the world from those offering their opinions, always listen to what your instinct is telling you and remember that you know your baby and yourself best- it sounds simple but often we forget. From our experience, some of the best advice we received was: Ask for help - so often we forget this and it's so important. Don't be afraid to ask for help from friends, family, your partner - even if it's to watch your baby for 15 minutes whilst you have a power nap. Asking for help is so important. Especially if you are struggling with any kind of postpartum depression - please reach out to your GP, Health Visitor and/or midwife. Take care of yourself. Remember, a happy mum is a happy baby. Especially in the first few weeks and months when you are sleep deprived, stressed and your hormones are haywire. Nourish your body with balanced meals, stay hydrated and try to rest as much as you can. 'Sleep when the baby sleeps' was never realistic for us, but laying down for 10 minutes whilst your little one naps and letting your body rest and recover is really important. There's no 'Perfect Mum' - try to remove the pressure you put on yourself to be the 'perfect mum'. You're doing your best so be kind to yourself. Each motherhood journey is different and has its own challenges so try to remember this. Remove comparison. Every mum and every baby is different so what works for one mum may look entirely different to another. Not only this but every birth experience is different too and some experiences may take longer to recover from - mentally and physically. So try to remove the comparison and focus on what works best for you and your baby. Try to take a few moments a day to enjoy the journey - your baby is only this little once and they grow up so fast. Getting caught up in the day-to-day is easy to do but try to take some time to cuddle your baby without distractions, go for a walk in the park with them - these are the moments you'll truly cherish forever, even amongst the harder days. You won't remember tidying the house or doing the dishes whilst your baby sleeps but you will remember the cuddles and quiet moments spent with them. Being a mum is one of the hardest but one of the best jobs in the world. Every mum is on their own journey so do what works best for you and your baby, enjoy the journey and take care of yourself.

Becoming a mum brings about such a life altering shift. All of a sudden life is so different to how you once knew it and it can bring a lot of overwhelm. It's important to remember that there is no one way of doing things, be gentle and kind to yourself and find what works best for you. You know what's best for your baby, your family and yourself. If you feel like you need some professional advice on navigating the postpartum period, please reach out to your GP, Midwife and/or Health Visitor. You do not need to go through this alone. Try to get outside every day, even for 10 minutes. Fresh air helps to clear your mind and can also help with baby's sleep pattern too (which is a bonus!). Putting a podcast on and going for a walk is a really good way to shift any negative feelings you may be experiencing and a good light hearted podcast always helps! Find your community. Meeting other mums who are going through something similar helps you to know that you aren't alone in this journey of Motherhood. Although it can feel lonely, joining groups and chatting with other mums reminds you that there are so many other mums in the same boat as you. Try to take some time out for yourself. I know this is easier said than done, but even 5 minutes can have so many benefits. Having a bath, waking up 10 minutes earlier so you have some time to have a coffee in peace, putting a face mask on - whatever your thing is, try to take some time for yourself, it really is a game changer. Remember a happy mum = a happy baby. Try to let go. We have high expectations of ourselves as mums but when we have little ones, having unrealistic expectations of how things should be can cause you a whole host of stress, especially when every day is different. Often things don't 'go to plan' when you have a little one; cue refusing naps, being too distracted to feed etc.., and letting go and going with the flow more really helps you to relax when things don't go as expected. Little ones are unpredictable and by removing the pressure of how we think things should look/be and by accepting what is, we allow ourselves to become happier and more relaxed.

Here are some tips that we found helpful for this phase and hope you find helpful, too. Remember this is a common phase for toddlers (it's part of their development) & you aren't alone! Sitting down to eat with your toddler can help - especially if you eat the same meal as what you have given them. Modelling behaviour from you can help them to reduce fussiness at mealtimes. Try to make sure you aren't adding sweet foods into a savoury meal - they will more often than not prefer the sweet flavours in their meal! Offering a variety of flavours throughout the week can help to avoid tantrums if they aren't offered a sweet dish as they will be used to getting a range of flavours. Adding textured and finger foods to your toddler's meal when they start solids can help to reduce fussiness as they can explore and play with their food - which is actually great for their development and familiarity with different types of foods! Adding bite-sized pieces of soft fruit and veg to their meals so they can pick up pieces of food themselves can make meal times more fun! Try to relax and take a deep breath - trying to encourage your child to eat certain foods that they are rejecting can make things worse. Using positive encouragement and modelling behaviour is the best route to go down in our opinion!
