Pregnancy Milestones – 'What to Expect When You're Expecting'

As your baby grows inside you, there are various developmental milestones to be aware of. Understanding these can help you embrace each stage of your pregnancy.

  1. First Trimester: In these initial 12 weeks, you'll experience a whirlwind of changes. Your baby's neural tube forms, the heart starts beating, and facial features begin to develop. Scans such as the dating scan to confirm your due date usually occurs around 12 weeks.

  2. Second Trimester: Between 13 and 26 weeks, your baby's organs begin to function, and you'll likely feel those first exciting kicks. The anatomy scan around week 20 is a detailed ultrasound that checks for developmental milestones.

  3. Third Trimester: As you approach your due date, you'll start attending more frequent antenatal appointments. This period is also about preparing for labour; you'll discuss birthing options, possibly take a tour of the birthing facility, and finalise your birthing plan if you wish to create one.

Each trimester comes with its own set of milestones and challenges. Being knowledgeable about what to expect can help you feel more in control and know what to expect.
